PREPARATIONS for the belated Matabeleland South Provincial 21st February Movement celebrations to be held in Ngwizi area in Mangwe District on Saturday are at an advanced stage, an official said yesterday.

The celebrations are an annual event meant to inculcate into young Zimbabweans the principles of hard work, honesty and patriotism that President Robert Mugabe personifies.

The movement sets aside a day every year to celebrate the birthday and achievements of the revolutionary icon who was born on February 21, 1924. This year’s main celebrations were held in Victoria Falls.

The Zanu-PF Youth League provincial chairperson, Cde Washington Nkomo, told The Chronicle that all was on track for the celebrations with mobilisation of people progressing well.

He said hundreds of people from all walks of life were expected to attend the event to run under the theme “Celebrating the birth of Gushungo the Icon of Zimbabwe’s revolution and champion of Youth Empowerment.”

“Preparations are moving smoothly and we’re quite happy. We have fund raising committees in all the seven districts which are busy on the ground preparing for this big day where we celebrate the life of the revolutionary icon.

“We’re inviting all youths to come in numbers regardless of political affiliation. This will be a platform for youths to interact on issues affecting them and for them to have a better understanding of the role they should play in promoting further development,” said Cde Nkomo.

He said the province had chosen the celebrations to be held in Mangwe to show the Kalanga community that President Mugabe respected them hence shame those who were trying to plant a seed of hatred for the President among Kalangas. We’re taking the celebrations to the Kalanga community to show them that it is a lie that the President doesn’t like them. We know that the Kalanga people also support President Mugabe,” said Cde Nkomo.

He said a number of activities have been lined up for the day and entertainment from various artistes including Ndolwane Super Sounds, Magwaza and Tholakele who is based in South Africa, would be provided to cheer the people.
