THERE are plans to establish a combat sports gym in Matabeleland South to expose boxers and other athletes to the latest training systems and techniques. This was revealed by the province’s boxing co-ordinator, Maculwamahle Nkomo, who said they were on a mission to establish a gym to enhance the boxers’ performance and help them stay fit and ready for any fight.
Matabeleland South province has not been in the sporting limelight until the triumphs of Gwanda-born female boxer Monica “Savage” Mnkandla.
Her story has inspired many youngsters who have since taken up the sport with the hope of turning professional. That in part, has also been instrumental in growing the sport in the province.
Nkomo told Zimpapers Sports Hub that they aim to make Matabeleland South a boxing hub.“There are big plans on board and one of the major ones is to have a combat sport gym. This is dear to us in our endeavour to uplift boxing in Matabeleland South. The vision is for the gym to be a centre of excellence or a boxing high-performance centre, with state-of-the-art boxing and fitness equipment to be run by experts. This we feel will ultimately increase the podium performance of our boxers.
“This gym will also be beneficial to other structures, especially in primary and secondary schools, and even tertiary institutions,” she said.
Nkomo said the establishment of the gym needs funding and they will seek partners in their pursuit. — @NkosieLegend
