THE Matabeleland South Province will today hold its inter-district ball games competitions for primary schools at Pelandaba Stadium in Gwanda town.Elton Sinyosi, the National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) chairperson said the province’s eight districts will battle it out for two days in soccer, netball, volleyball and basketball.

Teams from Bulilima, Mangwe, Insiza, Umzingwane, Matobo, Beitbridge, Gwanda North and Gwanda South districts arrived in the mining town yesterday ahead of the competitions.

Competitions at district level were held last week.

“Each district will bring two teams (boys and girls) for volleyball and basketball whereas soccer will be played by boys only and netball by girls only. These will be select teams from districts not schools.

“We are going to select a provincial team from these teams that will go for inter-provincial competitions to be held in Masvingo from July 22-25 next week,” said Sinyosi who is also Naph national sports and welfare chairperson.

He said the selected provincial team will camp at Senondo Primary School until departure for Masvingo on Tuesday next week.

Although the teams did not impress in last year’s inter-provincial competitions, there was optimism that this year would be a better year.

“This time we are hoping for the best. We hope to come out with the best team in Matabeleland South that will go and challenge other teams,” he said.

Sinyosi however bemoaned erratic payments from schools saying it negatively affected activities such as transporting and feeding participants.

“We are hoping for positive responses from parents so that sport in Matabeleland South does not suffer,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sinyosi has been appointed into the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) Competitions Committee.
