Mat South step up Youth Games preps

month with renovations of facilities currently underway.
The games will run from August 14 to 20 with all provinces expected to take part.

Sports Commission Youth Education through Sport national programme officer, Tirivashe Nheweyembwa, said preparations were at an advanced stage with the renovations and construction of sport facilities set to be completed early next month.
“We had a team in Matabeleland South recently to interface with the provincial leadership in form of provincial education director on how far they have gone in terms of preparations to host the games.

“They were also going to tour the games village and construction work is underway at Gwanda High School where bathing facilities are being constructed.
“At Mzingwane High two volleyball courts are being renovated and two more are being constructed and will be ready by early August.
“At Pelandaba stadium I can confirm that multipurpose courts are being constructed outside the stadium,” said Nheweyembwa.

Nheweyembwa said that Pretoria Portland Cement has committed themselves to assist with the construction work and will be working together with the local organisers.
“Pretoria Portland Cement are providing some of the material and have committed themselves to assist in ensuring that the track at Pelandaba stadium is up to standard,” said Nheweyembwa.

All provinces are expected to register their athletes by end of this month and pay up their affiliation fees US$45 per head.
“The system of accreditation is in place and all provinces are reminded they should enter their teams by sport code and gender by July 31.

“We also want to implore the provinces to meet their side of the bargain, they should ensure that they pay ahead of the games,” said Nheweyembwa.
Nheweyembwa said they were going to have a youth conference during the games and this year’s theme is ‘The role of sport in nation building’.

Participants will make their presentations on the theme.
“Each and every province will make a presentation on what role sport can play in nation building.
“We will then submit the declaration to the government to say that this is what is from the participants and what they want to see being done,” said Nheweyembwa.
