THE response to a player developmental programme being conducted at Khumalo Hockey Stadium every Sunday after lunch has been encouraging.
According to Matabeleland Hockey Board media officer, Jerry Sullivan, turnout has been heartening with youngsters pitching up to get coaching.
“The first attendance at Khumalo last Sunday was very encouraging with a large group of 5-9-year olds as well as older more advanced boys as well as girls. Total numbers attending are around sixty and we expect them to increase as the word spreads to more players,” said Sullivan.
The sessions which began a few days ago intended to promote and uplift the sport in the region after the board noted that the area is lagging behind when compared with other provinces which are highly actively,” said Sullivan.
Invited are boys and girls aged 6-16 who learn the skills of the trade free of charge from experts of the game working hand in glove with the MHB.
The targeted participations have been flocking to the giant arena before the Easter holiday and the programme will remain on the calendar of the board as it intensifies its efforts of player development within the region.
Meanwhile at an invitational tournament held at the same venue to prepare school teams going to South Africa Girls College women won the gold medal after edging Ivys 1-0 in the final.
The silver medal went to Bulawayo Hockey Club who brushed aside Girls College reserve side 4-1. In the men’s category the best team was Zim Men green who went away with the bragging rights after dismissing Zim Men Red 4-2 in the final.
The third position went to Falcon who thrashed their counterparts from Christian Brothers College 4-0.
