A NUMBER of teachers drawn from schools around Matabeleland North gathered for an event dubbed “Fitness Through Sport” at Amakhosi grounds in Gwabalanda last Sunday.

The programme, targeting mainly sport teachers based in Mat North is the brain child of Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZITSA). It is meant to be a capacity building programme aimed at empowering teachers from both primary and secondary with the necessary coaching skills needed to develop young athletes at grassroots level that is at schools.

Some of the disciplines covered under this programme are football, volleyball and athletics among others. In terms of the turnout, Nkosi Sibanda the Interim chairman of the Chapter was happy with the number of teachers who turned up.

“We are targeting both primary and secondary teachers. I am very happy that a large number took part in this great initiative over the weekend even though it was our first time to meet after the AGM in October 2018. This day was a success in that we had more than 50 people and the number is likely to rise due to increased channels of communication,” said Sibanda.

The programme also aims to develop district operations, organise technical structures, share information on developing trends, available courses and currents trends in all sports covered under their banner.

On December 20 to 22 in association with the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) they will conduct a Level 1 Athletics Coaching course at a venue yet to be advised.
