Matabeleland Tuskers win at last

VICTORY has been a long time coming for Matabeleland Tuskers, who began the season with a superb winning streak, but recently have lost two Logan Cup matches and two Pro50 matches in succession. Now, after a hard-fought match, they have finally triumphed again, beating Mountaineers at Mutare Sports Club by 94 runs.

Their bowling hero on the final day was seamer Steve Chimhamhiwa, who worked his way through the host middle order to take four wickets for 66. Having lost two wickets overnight for only 18 runs, Mountaineers faced a heavy task in chasing a target of 291 — the highest total of the match.

Their captain Tinotenda Mawoyo was still there and much depended on him. Donald Tiripano, the night-watchman, was in with him, and for an hour and a half they stayed together.

They took advantage of some loose bowling in the first couple of overs but then the bowlers put things together temporarily and runs became difficult to get.

Scorecard

Matabeleland Tuskers – 194 and 267 all out in 80.1 overs (Godwill Mamhiyo 82, Bornaparte Mujuru 63; Tapiwa Mufudza 4/54, Natsai M’shangwe 3/57, Roy Kaia 2/19)

Mountaineers – 171 and 196 all out in 58.4 overs (Tinotenda Mawoyo 44, Forster Mutizwa 41; Steve Chimhamhiwa 4/66, John Nyumbu 3/38, Luke Jongwe 3/41)
