FORMER Highlanders FC marksman Ralph Matema is hopeful of better fortunes to come for his South African First Division side Witbank Spurs.Matema promised last month that they would fight for a better finish.
He was on target last week but could not do much on Saturday as his team played a goalless draw with Sivutsa Stars. He said they would continue to have a better approach than last season.
He has been on target twice. Matema was once a feared striker in his days at Bosso. He said people must not judge his performance according to the goals he has scored so far because as a seasoned player he now guides other players on the field.
“There is nothing interesting than sharing your football knowledge and experience with youngsters and making them enjoy the game.
“If ever there is a chance to score goals I will do that, but I believe selfishness does not work in the beautiful game, if there is an open space I would rather create chances for other players. I scored my second goal last week against Thanda Royal Zulu FC, I’m happy about that, my main priority is to help the team collect as many points as possible. The other thing is to make the team tick.”
The former Orlando Pirates player is happy that he is now playing regularly. He hopes that he can stay injury-free until the end of the season.
Matema and his other two countrymen, former Young Warriors and Harare United players Patrick and Peter Mubaiwa drew 0-0 with another Mpumalanga-based team Sivutsa Stars on Sunday afternoon at Puma Rugby Stadium.
All the Zimbabweans played.
“The game was tough but we managed to hold them, a point in football is very important,” said the former prolific scorer.
There was only one Absa Premier League game played on Saturday, with Kaitano Tembo’s SuperSport United beating Orlando Pirates 2-1.
