Zimbabwe’s maternal mortality ratio has dropped significantly to 525 deaths per 100 000 births from 900 deaths per 100 000 births in 2010, a senior Government official has said.Health and Child Care Secretary Dr Gerald Gwinji, who was giving oral evidence before the Health Parliamentary Portfolio Committee last week, attributed the decline to improved skilled care attendance, training of midwives and provision of blood, among other factors.
Dr Gwinji said they wanted to reduce the figure to between 70 and 112 deaths per 100 000 births by 2015, but warned that chances of meeting that target were slim.
“We are moving significantly towards that target, but we will not hit the mark,” he said.
“There can never be zero percent mortality rate. Although progress has been made.”
