Mat’land sends SOS for damaged schools

THE Senior Minister of State, Senator Simon Khaya Moyo, has called on the business community to assist in repairing 26 schools that were damaged by heavy rains in Matabeleland North and South provinces recently.
“I have received numerous appeals for urgent assistance as the aftermath has left hundreds of pupils stranded and in some cases learning in the open,” said Sen Khaya Moyo.

“I call upon the business community in these areas and other well wishers across the country and beyond to stand up and be counted by mobilising resources to assist in this desperate situation.”

He implored provincial administrators, who chair the Provincial Civil Protection Units, and district administrators to work with other stakeholders to assist the affected communities.

The most affected districts in Matabeleland South were Beitbridge, Insiza, Matobo, Bulilima and Umzingwane while in Matabeleland North Nyamandlovu District was the most affected.

In some areas the rains destroyed homes and injured people while some including livestock were struck by lightning.
The Meteorological Services Department has warned of violent thunderstorms at the beginning of the rainy season and attributed the development to high temperatures being experienced across the country.
