AFTER a stellar performance at this year’s Bulawayo Arts Festival, Afro-Fusion sensation Matojeni Melo Maniacs, is set to take Europe by storm. The ensemble is preparing for its second official international tour, with performances scheduled across Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany, from July 10 to September 6.

Formed in 2023, Matojeni Melo Maniacs has swiftly established itself as a powerful voice for Matabeleland’s musical and cultural identity. Their upcoming tour will see them grace prominent European stages, including the Indigenous Festival in Italy and the Chiala Africa Festival in Graz, Austria. They will also perform at a range of theatres and concert venues throughout the Czech Republic and Austria.

Group founder and director Blessings Nqo — a member of the acclaimed Insingizi trio and now based in Austria — described the tour as a continuation of the group’s vision to make an impact both locally and globally.

“As we approach the European summer, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be on tour from July through September. This second European trip is even more exciting because the team will stay longer and showcase what Matabeleland has to offer at a deeper level.

“When we created this project, we envisioned balancing our presence in both local and international markets. Our local gigs in Zimbabwe have served as a litmus test and we believe we’re more than ready,” said Nqo.

The group comprises five versatile artistes — Thandeka Patricia “Thandy Dhlana” Jele, Gugulethu “Gugue” Sibanda, Cheryl Mabaya, Mthabisi Moyo and Bekezela “Sjure” Siziba — each bringing unique talents that form a cohesive, culturally rich act.

At its core, the project not only promotes and preserves Ndebele culture, but also champions women’s empowerment through access to artistic platforms and global visibility.

Lead vocalist, Thandy Dhlana expressed her pride and enthusiasm for the journey ahead.

“Being part of Matojeni Melo Maniacs has been a transformative experience. The creative process helped me rediscover myself and reconnect with my roots. We’re ready to share the soul of Matabeleland and Zimbabwe with the world,” she said.

Veteran percussionist Siziba, who rose to prominence with Siyaya, is equally excited about this new chapter.

“The world is full of possibilities and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent my culture again on a global stage.

This is our time to make the world believe in Matabeleland’s creative excellence,” said Siziba.

With a refreshing blend of traditional beats, contemporary rhythms and powerful storytelling, Matojeni Melo Maniacs is poised to leave a lasting impression across Europe.
