Sellers Symposium expected to cement business linkages between the two countries.
The Buyers and Sellers Symposium, which is running under the theme “Mauritius for Africa”, will be held in Harare between October 13 and 15. The Mauritian Minister of Industry and Trade, Mr Cader Sayed Hossen, will lead the delegation.
The event which is being spearheaded by Enterprise Mauritius will see over 20 Mauritian exhibitors and businessmen including Government ministers.
In an interview with the Herald Business, Enterprise Mauritius sector manager Mr Rajen Subbamah, who is on an advance mission to organise the event, said the expo will facilitate improved business activity between the two countries.
“We will also be helping small and medium enterprises who may want to export their products into Mauritius. The event will also offer an opportunity to facilitate joint ventures between companies of the two countries,” he said.
The Mauritian companies expected to come to Zimbabwe will be drawn from textile, garments and accessories, light engineering jewellery, agro-industry (including beverages and seafood, consultancy services, ICT / BPO, logistics, printing, packaging, publishing and plastics, furniture, paints and chemicals among others.
Zimbabwe and Mauritius are both members of the Southern Africa Development Community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa but trade between the two countries is still limited.
Enterprise Mauritius is working in conjunction with local firm, Sensational Image and Events Management (Pvt) Ltd, in organising the event. Sensational Image and Events Management representative Ms Yvonne Chiweshe-Gundu said they were in the process of engaging local companies that will participate in the event.
“This is an opportunity that falls in line with targets set in the Medium Term Plan with regards to the improving the capacities of small-to-medium enterprises.
“We are currently working with business chambers and organisations in the country, such as the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, ZimTrade and the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries to ensure greater participation,” she said.
The Buyers and Sellers Symposium will be followed by an Education Symposium between October 14 and 15, which is expected to feature more than eight Mauritian tertiary institutions.
To this extent, the delegation is also expected to include the Mauritian Minister of Tertiary Education, Mr Rajesh Jeetah.
“This will be an opportunity for Zimbabweans to come and study in Mauritius,” said Mr Subbamah.
Enterprise Mauritius has carried out similar initiatives on the continent in countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Madagascar.
