THE Northern Region Soccer League took another explosive turn at the weekend as the battle for championship intensifies.

Army side Black Rhinos reclaimed pole position with a late 1-0 win over Ngezi U-19 at Baobab on Saturday.

The win saw them leapfrog MWOS, who were held to a one draw at home by Scottland while Harare City played to a goalless draw with Agama.

Black Rhinos have 46 points and they will be hoping to continue with their fine run but they face tough competition for the sole ticket back to the topflight.

Scottland, who are in fourth position on the log standings, remain serious contenders.

The ambitious side, made quality acquisitions during the mid-season window break making their winning intentions clear.

Among the acquisitions is Ronald Pfumbidzai, Allen Gahadzikwa and Leeroy Mavhunga.

The club also brought in coach Genesis ‘Kaka’ Mangombe to boost their technical bench.

Mavhunga said his return from Botswana was meant to give himself a chance to sign for one of the topflight league sides. However, failed to materialise after Scottland came in the picture.

“I spent several seasons in Botswana and had a decent time there. But I felt I needed to come back home to establish myself more as a player with one of the topflight teams.

“When my management was in touch with some of the leading clubs I was expecting to land, Scottland declared their interests on me.

“After deliberating with my management we found it worth giving it a try as their project was a bit interesting and the offer wasn’t bad.

“I believe if I give a good account of myself I can also find myself back in the books of the national team, which I have been looking forward to.

“But now I want to enjoy every minute with Scottland and try to help the club gain a ticket to topflight football.

“There is a lot of competition in the league hence we have to give all we have for us to make it,” he said.
