Mavhunga targeting league title

MANICA Diamonds utility player Trevor Mavhunga is confident they will give a good run to the leaders in the battle for the league championship.

Considered outsiders, in the title race, Manica Diamonds were held to a 1-1 draw by Herentals on Sunday.

They now have a Manicaland Derby against Green Fuel at Gibbo.

Manica Diamonds are currently in third place with 36 points from 20 matches, five behind log leaders Highlanders.

“I think we need to be more prolific in front of goal and convert chances,” said Mavhunga.

“As the race intensifies, goal difference becomes an issue and we should be in a position to be at an advantage.

“We have a very good squad, with more experience, which can lead us to the Promised Land.

“We don’t want to drop points as we want to capitalise on those who are on top of us.”

With 14 more matches remaining, Mavhunga thinks it is too early to be predicting the outcome of the title race.

“There are still more games and chances of improving our winning ratio.

“A lot can still happen as the race is still wide open.

“We still stand a big chance and we will give all we have to implement what the coaches are telling us. I believe we have the capacity to take the championship race to the line.”

He added:

“Obviously, I expect to help my team in all the remaining fixtures I will play. I have to focus game by game and not worry much about future games.

“We have to start collecting maximum points against Green Fuel.

“They are a good team and they are also looking to win their games as they want to drift away from the relegation zone.

“But, I believe we are prepared for them, they have somehow gained momentum but I think we are hungrier than them.”
