MEMBER of Parliament for Nketa in Bulawayo, Albert Mavunga has made it his mission to ensure schools in his constituency are not left behind in terms of sports development.
Mavunga shared his vision at an event held at Emganwini High School on Friday where he donated sports equipment to schools in the constituency.
The equipment covered two disciplines, football and basketball. The consignment included playing balls and a kit for each school.
The schools that benefited from the donation include Manondwane Primary, Nketa Primary, Mgiqika Primary, Emganwini Primary, Senzangakhona Primary, Ngwenyama Primary, Angels Primary, Maranatha Primary, Nketa High, Maranatha High, Tropical College, Maryrose, Ingwalo Secondary and Emganwini High.
He said his gesture is anchored on President Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and place behind.
“It has always been my dream that, as I grow, I will be able to give back to the community. I faced many challenges growing up, but I have always been determined to overcome them. Staying focused and having the determination to succeed in life is key. If you are focused on your dreams, they will come true. Whether it’s time for sports or for class, give it your all.
“Sport is a powerful tool in the fight against drug and substance abuse, which is why I have made it my mandate to ensure Nketa is not left behind in terms of sports development. My commitment is to ensure that every year, schools in this constituency receive the equipment they need,” said Mavunga.
The event was also attended by Langa Ndlovu from the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (Buz) and Zifa provincial chairman Francis Ntutha.
“We are grateful and happy to witness such an event. We hope to identify and nurture talent at the grassroots level, and we thank the honourable member for this generous gesture,” said Ndlovu.
Ntutha said: “We have a strong relationship with Naph and Nash, and we are happy that teachers are participating in coaching programmes that will help develop the game of football.”
Naph is the National Association for Primary School Heads while Nash is the National Association of Secondary School Heads.
