FOOTBALL fans in Matabeleland South are in for an early treat this weekend as regional rivals Mawabeni FC and Gwanda Pirates FC square off in a pre-season friendly at Phelandaba Stadium on Sunday.
The encounter forms part of both teams’ preparations for their upcoming campaigns and is expected to offer a useful indication of how far the two sides have progressed during the off-season.
Dubbed Amawab’amahle, Mawabeni have been quietly building momentum ahead of the new season, and Sunday’s double-header will give the technical team an opportunity to assess the squad under competitive conditions. They will be competing in the Zifa Bulawayo Province league, while Gwanda Pirates play in the Zifa Central Region league.
Two matches are scheduled for the day, with the first kicking off at 12:30PM before the main encounter at 3PM.
Pre-season matches are often more about experimentation than results, but fixtures between teams from the same province rarely lack intensity. Even in a friendly environment, the clash between Mawabeni and Gwanda Pirates is expected to carry a strong competitive edge.
For Mawabeni, the match offers a chance to fine-tune combinations and evaluate individual performances as the coaching staff works to assemble a balanced squad capable of making a strong impression in the new season.
Supporters will also be keen to see how the team has strengthened during the off-season and whether the club can build on the momentum that has been steadily growing around it.
On the other hand, Gwanda Pirates will also be eager to use the fixture to sharpen their preparations and test their squad depth against familiar opposition.
With both clubs representing Matabeleland South, the match has the feel of a local derby — the kind of fixture that always draws attention from football followers in the province.
The venue, Phelandaba Stadium, is expected to provide an ideal setting for the encounter, with fans from Gwanda and surrounding areas likely to turn out in numbers to support their teams.
