FA Nkomazana, the director of Zifa Matabeleland South Division Two outfit Mawabeni FC, has praised his club’s goalkeeper, Antony Dube, for the good run the log leaders are enjoying.
“He has conceded just two goals in 13 matches. Dube is the mainstay of the club. The boys are playing well and are dreaming of winning as many matches in the campaign as they can.
“I think we are more organised and focused this season. We have learnt from past seasons and take each game as it comes. We always emphasise that the boys must go out and have fun on the pitch. Mawabeni maintained pole position with a crucial 1-0 victory over Gwanda Pirates at the weekend,” said Nkomazana.
“The season is on and everyone at this stage is putting everything on the deck for a good onslaught, be it for the title or fight against relegation. Like all the teams, we are fighting for a better outcome at the end of the season,” said Nkomazana.
Ntando Mpofu was the hero of the club at the weekend, scoring the winner against fourth-placed Gwanda Pirates who are among the favourites.
The win took their points’ tally to 28 from 13 matches, in which they have won eight, drawn four times and lost once.
Out of the 13 games they have played this season, Mawabeni have only conceded twice while finding the back of the net on 17 occasions.
Mawabeni had all the motivation to win as businessmen Nathan Greenland and Mbesuma Nkomazana placed a R5 000 carrot to be shared by the players.
Their latest victims, Gwanda Pirates are fourth on the table with 22 points and have a game in hand. In second place is Delete tied on 25 points with Super Strikers.
The community run Mawabeni have their sights on gaining promotion to the Division One League.
They are keen to follow the footsteps of Stars United from the same district who played in Division One and gave a good account of themselves in the 1990s.
