Mayor calls for vendor-friendly policies

HARARE Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, has said council should come up with friendly policies which protect and encourage the informal sector.

Addressing members of the Small to Medium Enterprise Committee and city council officials, Cllr Mafume said they needed to intervene to prevent fatal fights over market space.

“The informal sector is now a matter of life-and-death for citizens.

“Currently at Mupedzanhamo in Mbare, roads are blocked as a security measure,” he said.

Council, he said, should create an environment which does not create the challenges being seen at places like Mupedzanhamo and the Glenview Home Industry Complex, which keeps being gutted by fire.

He said there was need to allow operations of mobile restaurants and commuter omnibuses.

There must be laws, said the mayor, which govern the operations of vendors.

“Council has to be innovative in terms of data collection.

“It should collect information of our informal traders and track their contribution individually to the revenue of the city,” he said.
