HARARE Mayor Jacob Mafume says First Steet needs a facelift as a matter of urgency.
He has also called upon all critical stakeholders to unite and engage in constructive discussions to shape the future trajectory of the capital in the wake of challenges being faced due to increased rural-urban migration.
“First Street requires our urgent attention as we need assistance in transforming this important street in our capital together,” said Mafume. Once the pride of the capital, First Street has lost its glamour in recent years and has been invaded by vendors and it’s now one of the dirtiest streets in the capital.

In a speech read on his behalf at the Urban Renewal Breakfast Programme, Mafume said the current pace of development in Harare has not kept up with the rapid population growth and the increasing demand for services.
He said there was need for stakeholders to pay attention to the rehabilitation of First Street as it is a matter of urgency.
“There is no better time than now for all critical stakeholders to come together and discuss the desired trajectory of our city.
“We need to share ideas and collaborate under the transformative banner of urban renewal to regenerate Harare and all other urban cities in the Zimbabwe.
“As a city, we cannot do this alone but if we work together with our various stakeholders, expertise, resources and commitment we can make our city more liveable and prosperous.”
