The fund’s deputy chairperson, Pastor Kilton Moyo, said this when OK Mart Bulawayo donated $2 500 worth of groceries yesterday.
The groceries included cooking oil, kapenta fish, sugar beans and powdered soup.
Pastor Moyo said he was grateful to God, companies and everyone who has contributed to make the needy in society smile during the festive season.
“We are very grateful to God and it is interesting because we surpassed the target, which is a blessing. The needy will be happy to receive the gifts,” he said.
The branch manager for OK Mart Bulawayo, Mr Cosmas Nemutenzi, said the donation was his company’s way of saying thank you to the Bulawayo community.
“We do this to give a cheer to members of society, which are the needy and less privileged. This also is our way of saying thank you to the community of Bulawayo for the support they have rendered to our company,” said Mr Nemutenzi.
The council’s senior public relations officer, Mrs Nesisa Mpofu, said she was happy for the response towards the cheer fund.
“We are grateful to God for being merciful and providing us with all that we have. At the moment we are at $204 000 in terms of cash and donated goods. This is more than what we had hoped for,” said Mrs Mpofu.
She said 38 institutions in Bulawayo, including individuals, children and old people’s homes as well as hospitals, would benefit from the fund.
“We will distribute all that we have on 20 December next week. All individuals who registered with the Council Social Works will also benefit,” said Mrs Mpofu.
The Christmas Cheer Fund is held annually during the festive season to assist the needy in society.
