MP calls for law to allow pregnant pupils to continue with education

Speaking at a regional youth conference for youths on reproduction in Harare on Thursday, Ms Sibanda said they were advocating for the girl child to have equal opportunities with boys in education.
“We are not encouraging the girl child to fall pregnant during their educational course, but rather in case it happens there should be a law that permits them to continue with school and after giving birth as well,” she said.

Ms Sibanda said the request would be a “major breakthrough” for women if it was passed into law.
“For long, the girl child has been lagging behind and continuing (with) education will empower her reducing the risk of vulnerability.
“With the constitution-making process almost coming to an end, there is great need for that to be checked as well.

“We are advocating for universities to take up girls even with low points to make up for the gap that is between them and their (male) counterparts,” she said.
Students and Youth Working on Reproductive Health Action Team (Saywhat) presented a document with the girl child’s grievances to the MP
“Prioritise policy and budget for young women empowerment and maternal health for sustainable development,” read part of the document.

Saywhat said there was need for strengthening  collaboration between student representative bodies and Parliament.
The body is an organisation of students in tertiary institutions acting as a platform for students to meet and interact on their reproductive health concerns.
Sadc countries were represented at the conference.
