THE Bulawayo Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund was launched on Friday where more than $2 000 in cash and goods worth $1 700 were raised.
The launch, held in the council chambers was attended by captains of industry, senior council officials and councillors.
Speaking at the launch, the Mayor, Councillor Martin Moyo said donations to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund give the less privileged in society a sense of belonging and appreciation that they were being cared for. He said the cheer fund runs on a target of $100 000 but last year only $15 000 was raised.
“We usually run on a target of $100 000, in a good year I remember we raised $60 000, though last year we only raised $15 000.
Our humanness should come out, and give a cheer and a smile on what could have been a sad face on Christmas,” said Clr Moyo.
“During this time of the year, I think of the homes like Entembeni, and all other orphanages need support. Every year we donate clothes and basic needs to the elderly, disabled, homeless and children’s homes,” said Clr Moyo.
He said despite the economic challenges the country was going through it was encouraging that the corporate world continued to offer the little help they could to the needy.
Among the companies that donated, both in cash and kind at the launch were Ingwebu Breweries, Rainbow Hotel, Food 4 Less and individuals.
