THE Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao fight has been billed as the most expensive fight in history with the two boxers splitting an estimated purse of almost £170m ($250m) between them. So it may seem like small beer that the belt that will be presented to the winner on May 2 will be worth a mere $1m. The emerald belt has been specially commissioned by the WBC who also commissioned an onyx version and then put them to a fans’ vote on their website.
The emerald version won with 53 percent, the WBC hailing it as an “exquisite masterpiece especially designed by the World Boxing Council, for a unique bout that is already gracing the pages of boxing history”.
Who will win the fight itself is still open to question although the bookies have Mayweather Jr odds-on for the contest and Pacquiao roughly 15-8.
With some estimates putting Mayweather’s net worth at around $300m an emerald belt should just about cover his drinks bill. — The Guardian
