Ali Sundowns secured their first home victory of the season, thanks to a stellar performance by striker Norest Mazeno, who netted a brace in a 5-1 thrilling encounter against Chinhoyi Stars.
The win comes after Sundowns were held to a frustrating draw by Trojan in their opening match of the campaign.
Mazeno’s brace not only sealed three crucial points for his side, but also sent a strong message to their rivals.
“We wanted to win our first home game after the draw in our opening match,” Mazeno said.
“This was a good way of warning our rivals that Ali Sundowns have arrived in the league.”
The forward said the team focuses on consistency as they go in their next encounter against Zambezi G&C on Friday.
“We are taking each game as it comes, with the priority of winning. Winning will only do us favours, it will bring more fans to our matches and help attract sponsors, which is good for the club. We aim to play at our best every time.”
Mazeno, who joined Ali Sundowns from Rusitu Tigers this season, has set high personal targets.
“I want to score at least a goal in every game I play,” he declared.
“My ambition is to be among the league’s top scorers by the end of the season. That’s my target. If it doesn’t happen, its okay, but I will push to achieve it.”
The striker also revealed his long-term aspirations, saying,
“Last season, I was at Rusitu Tigers, but I always wanted to play for a Harare-based team. Now that I’m here, I’ll keep working hard to earn recognition from bigger clubs like Highlanders. For now, my focus is on scoring goals and helping my team succeed.”
Ali Sundowns’ victory has injected early momentum into their campaign, the Mabvuku based side is in their debut season after spending almost two decades in the lower leagues.
