ZIMBABWE international striker Nelson Maziwisa says a host of missed opportunities cost them in the BancABC Sup8r Cup final when they lost to rivals Shabanie Mine on Saturday.Maziwisa believes the platinum miners, who lost 3-5 in the penalty shootout lottery, could have wrapped up the match had they utilised their chances during regulation time in front of a lively crowd at their Mandava fortress.
However, Maziwisa, who was the league’s top scorer last year while turning out for Shabanie Mine, appears to have lost his touch this year.
“The game was good I know goals will come. Playing against my former team was something good,” said Maziwisa.
“We failed to utilise our chances but it happens in Cup games. It was their day.
“We were not under pressure at all coming into this game because we knew that it could go either way and taking it all the way to the shootout showed that it was a tight contest.”
Maziwisa last season won the PSL Golden Boot award in the colours of Shabanie Mine.
“Playing in the final was a big achievement for us as a team,” said Maziwisa.
“We had prepared well for the game and the whole of last week we were focusing on it but unfortunately we lost. We created a lot of chances in the second half, which we could not utilise. All is not lost though since we are still in the league race.
“Our focus will now be on our next league game and I am hopeful that we will be ready for our next assignment.”
The Zvishavane Derby, which is proving quite popular with the local fans, produced a titanic clash that wasn’t a classic but kept the supporters on the edge of their seats.
But there were no goals for two hours and it had to go for a shootout.
