President Mugabe has proclaimed July 23, 2016 as the date for by-elections for Mazowe North constituency that fell vacant following the death of Cde Edgar Chidavaenzi.
In a Government Gazette published yesterday, President Mugabe ordered a new election for the constituency.
“I do, by this my proclamation, order a new election for the constituency of Mazowe North,” said President Mu- gabe.
“I fix Saturday the 23rd day of July, 2016, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if a poll becomes necessary in terms of Section 46 (17) (C) of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13).
As provided by law, President Mugabe said he had been notified by the Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, of the existence of the vacancy.
Section 39 (2) of the Electoral Act empowers the President to make a proclamation ordering new elections after receiving notification of a vacancy in the membership of Parliament.
In the proclamation, President Mugabe set May 27, 2016 as the date on which nomination courts shall sit to receive nominations of candidates for elections for the constituency.
The nomination courts will sit at Bindura Magistrates’ Court.
The by-elections comes as the late Mazowe North legislator Eng Chidavaenzi (Zanu-PF) was found dead in a city hotel room in March this year.
Eng Chidavaenzi, who was described as a reliable and dependable cadre who was actively involved in development programmes such as land reform and irrigation schemes, was buried at his Vukwe Farm in Mvurwi.
He was 52.
