THURSDAY’S edition of The Herald ran the headline “Zim out of Test cricket” which suggested Zimbabwe had lost its Test status. The story itself, picked from the ESPN Cricinfo website, talks about Zimbabwe not being included in the latest Test rankings and not what the headline crafted by the newspaper insinuates.
We wish to reassure everyone who might have been alarmed by the wrong headline that Zimbabwe has not lost its Test status and remains a Full Member of the International Cricket Council.
As a matter of fact, Zimbabwe is not included in the latest MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings following the annual update with results from 2012-13 no longer considered in the calculations and outcomes from the 2014-15 season weighted at 50 percent.
“Zimbabwe has 12 points, but has not played the required eight Test matches over the new rating period to be included on the main table.
“It will reflect on the table as soon as it plays two more Tests,” the ICC has explained.
We are happy that we are set to play two Tests at home to New Zealand this July and that will automatically see Zimbabwe back on the Test rankings table.
We will also be involved in Test cricket against Sri Lanka later this year, while we are continuously engaging other boards in our efforts to secure more bilateral series, including Tests, for Zimbabwe.
Our commitment to Test cricket remains unquestionable and as strong as ever.
