MANICALAND Basketball Association successfully held level one basketball coaching clinic at Mutare Girls’ High School last weekend.
The event, which was facilitated by MBA officials, drew participants from primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions.
Individuals who took part in the coaching course paid a registration fee of $30 for the two days.
The money paid will be directed towards the upcoming Basketball Union of Zimbabwe interprovincial competitions to be held in Masvingo from March 24 to 27.
The course is meant to improve basketball in Manicaland and Zimbabwe as a whole. Mutare Basketball Association spokesperson, Taurai Dhliwayo, said: “This year’s event was successful just like the previous one held last year. These clinics provide a learning experience for everyone and this is an opportunity to watch an experienced coach in action, take notes and later implement it with your own group.
“The event also provided ‘Community Coaching Clinics’. These were targeted at coaches of junior levels and those new to coaching and specifically the basketball scene.
“Coaches had the opportunity to watch an experienced junior coach take a group of young players through basic fundamentals, drills and philosophy of the game,” said Dhliwayo.
He added that unlike last year, the course had a high turnout this year.
“We saw people from as far as Mutasa, Makoni, Nyanga and Chimanimani districts taking part, unlike last year where we only had a few individuals from Mutare only. New things were really experienced last week,” he said.
However, selections of a provincial team to take part in the upcoming inter-provincial team are at an advanced stage.
A total of 20 ladies and 30 men have so far been drafted into the provincial teams that will be trimmed to 12 players for both categories.
