A 27-YEAR-OLD teacher at Detema Secondary School in Hwange District will spend a month behind bars for possessing dagga. Hwange magistrate Portia Mhlanga told Talent Bhekinkosi Nyathi of Duiker Avenue in Dete that he was not fit to be a teacher after he pleaded guilty to the crime.
“You are not fit to be a teacher. A short and sharp sentence will be appropriate as society looked up to you to lead by example. It can’t be proven if you only used dagga outside school,” said Mhlanga when passing sentence.
Prosecutor Memory Munsaka told how on June 26 at around 7PM police detectives who were patrolling the National Railways of Zimbabwe compound in Dete received a tip off that Nyathi had dagga in his possession.
The detectives proceeded to his house and conducted a search, which led to the recovery of 80 grammes of loose dagga.
Munsaka said the illegal substance with a street value of $80 was inside a plastic paper bag, which was later weighed leading to Nyathi’s arrest.
In mitigation Nyathi apologised for not being an exemplary civil servant.
“I apologise for the offence, I hope that was the last time I did it. What I did was wrong but I only smoked dagga after school,” he pleaded.
Nyathi said he started smoking dagga with friends last year and got hooked over time.
“Have mercy on me to be a better citizen of Zimbabwe. I never intended to cause any one harm,” he said.
