Mbare market inferno declared state of disaster

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has declared a state of disaster following a destructive fire at the Mbabre traders market.

This was revealed by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, President Mnangagwa declared the 8 October fire a state of disaster according to the Civil Protection Act.

“The unfortunate inferno, which razed down the whole retail section and parts of the wholesale market, affected over 4 000 traders whose livelihoods have been negatively impacted.

“The declaration will thus assist in mobilising necessary resources, in cash and kind, to support rebuilding of the market as well as assist affected entrepreneurs resuscitate their businesses,” reads the statement.

The nation has been advised that Government in collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders, is working flat out to build back better.

The fire destroyed stalls and goods on sale, leaving hundreds of traders devastatesd. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are yet to ascertain how the inferno started.
