MBERENGWA Rural District Council has acquired a drilling rig through devolution funds to ease water challenges in the district.

This initiative complements the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, which targets to drill 35 000 solar-powered boreholes across the country.

This investment in water infrastructure, which will improve access to clean water, enhance livelihoods and boost economic development in the district, is a testament to Government’s commitment to devolution and community development.

The new drilling rig was commissioned at Mapunye Primary School where a borehole was also drilled, benefitting the surrounding community.

Addressing the local community after commissioning the rig, Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Owen Ncube said water accessibility is critical in terms of achieving Vision 2030.

“This event not only represents a remarkable achievement but also exemplifies the transformative work being carried out by the Second Republic under the unparalleled leadership of His Excellency President Mnangagwa,” he said.

“The devolution programme has managed to transform our communities in the Midlands province and I am sure that at this pace, Vision 2030 is achievable before 2030.”

Mr Trymore Moyo, a villager, said access to clean water will help reduce the risk of contracting water-borne diseases, improve sanitation and enhance hygiene standards.

“We commend the Government for pushing the devolution agenda that has seen Mberengwa RDC purchasing the drilling rig, which is benefiting us as a local community through access to clean water,” he said.

Another villager, Mrs Estina Ngungumbane said: “We want irrigation for school gardens and community gardens to enhance food production and security. We are also looking at water for livestock, dairy farming and other income-generating activities.”

Mberengwa East legislator, Cde Tasara Hungwe said the new equipment will spur rural industrialisation and growth in line with Vision 2030.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa for availing devolution funds, which were used to procure some of the equipment for Mberengwa RDC,” he said.

“I also commend the local authority for using the funds productively. The equipment will go a long way in improving service delivery for local people.”
