The well travelled mbira princess was awarded a scholarship at Berklee College of Music during her last tour in Germany. It, however, covers half the expenses.
“I was offered a scholarship in May to study music performance with a major in voice and music business. The scholarship is worth US$18 000 but I still have to raise US$47 000, for the academic year and airfares,” she said.
Although the songstress admits it is a mammoth task to raise the amount, she is hopeful that things will turn for the good. So far, she has engaged the corporate world and has also been actively seeking assistance on social media platforms.
“This is an opportunity of a lifetime and it is an honour to be accepted at the contemporary music school that has produced over 250 Grammy Award winners. The acceptance rate is as low as 28 percent and as a Zimbabwean, I have the potential to represent the country on the international music scene,” she said.
Well-wishers willing to help her cause may deposit donations on her Facebook page titled “gofundme” or her bank account 87-505-060537-00. They may alternatively call her on 0778198896.
The 22-year-old has been outstanding since launching her music career. An A Academy top 20 finalist in 2008 and a StarBrite finalist in 2012, she has been on an upward trend since. She has so far has released hit singles and an album entitled “Love or Money”. She has also toured in Sweden, Denmark, Croatia, South Africa, Mozambique and most recently Germany, promoting mbira music.
If she gets the chance to study in Germany, she vowed to work hard to put the country’s music on the map. Record label companies such as Jay-Z’s Def Jam, Sony bmg, Universal and Universal records give preference to Berklee College graduates, making it the place to be.
