After suffering a huge blow when their music hall was destroyed by fire last month, Mbira DzeNharira will today be performing at their popular joint Gijima Sports Club to fund-raise for the reconstruction of the structure.
They are set to perform some new tracks from their forthcoming album.
In an interview, the group’s leader Tendai Gahamadze said they are going to use the money they get at their current shows to rebuild the destroyed hall.
“We have cleared the place and we are now planning and strategising on rebuilding it.
“Yes it was a big blow for us and it was a bit tricky to deal with at first, but we have since accepted it and we are ready to move on,” Gahamadze said.
Despite these misfortunes, they have promised a polished act tonight.
He said they are set to perform more new tracks which are on their upcoming album.
“As we said earlier on we are done on the songs on the new album and what is left is to record.
“Grammar records had promised us that we will start the recording end of May, but they have not contacted us yet, so if they do not communicate we will be left with no option but to look for another recording label.
“We are already marketing the songs during our live performances and songs such as ‘Karomo’ and ‘Mavirima’ among others are being received well, we are going to play more of these songs tomorrow, (today),” he said.
Meanwhile, the destroyed structure was a crucial part of the Mbira DzeNharira crew as it was used as a centre for traditional gatherings while various upcoming mbira artistes conducted training and rehearsals in the hall.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by an unknown homeless person who was secretly squatting at the shrine.
