Mbira player set for Uganda festival

Jazz and mbira player, Raven Duchess is set to represent Zimbabwe at the five-day event, Bayimba International Festival in Uganda this week.

She will showcase the rich cultural heritage of Zimbabwe through her unique music tomorrow.

The five-day festival is known for showcasing emerging artistic works providing a platform for cultural exchange among musicians worldwide. Duchess said she is honoured to have been selected to perform at Bayimba.

“I appreciate being a cultural music ambassador for Zimbabwe our authentic sound is loved internationally, and I am excited to share it with the Ugandan audience.”

Duchess, a skilled mbira player and percussionist, focuses on enticing the audience on a mystical music journey.

“The universe is diverse, and cultural exchange helps us understand one another.

“I am looking forward to collaborating with a Ugandan-based band and sharing my music with the Bayimba festival audience,” she said.

This performance marks the Duchess’s first East African festival appearance, with plans to expand to West and North Africa in the future.

Her music features the mbira, Zimbabwe’s national instrument, which she describes as having an organic feel that soothes the soul.

As a mental health advocate, Duchess appreciates the impact of music on well-being.

“I am grateful for every fan that has resonated with my music and supported me from day one,” said Duchess.

“The album features collaborations with iconic Zimbabwean artist Louis Mhlanga and other talented musicians.

“I produced this album and I am the music director, composer, songwriter, and singer, every performance is specially crafted by me and my band’s energy,” she remarked.
