A MAN from Gunje Village, Ward 16 in Mbire, Mashonaland Central Province, died last week after he was attacked by a hippopotamus while tending to his garden.

The tragic death of Mr London Makombe was confirmed by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo.

“Yes, we received a report where a man was protecting his garden from the hippo and unfortunately he was attacked to death, it is unfortunate and we encourage communities to at least try to give way to the animals and try not to get too close for their comfort.

“It is unfortunate in this incident the man was trying to protect his livelihood and tragically lost his life, another sad day for the communities in Mbire.

“Generally we encourage communities to move less during the night because this is the time animals move more often as well,” said Farawo.
