FORMER Warriors striker George Mbwando was in Bulawayo this past week as he continued filming clips for his upcoming documentary, The Warrior, a project that seeks to chronicle his football journey and revisit an important chapter of the Zimbabwe national team’s history.
The documentary is expected to be released in December, with Mbwando revealing that the production could potentially find its way onto global streaming platform Netflix if the platform is impressed by what it sees.
Mbwando used his time in Bulawayo to capture more footage for the project, meeting some of the city’s football personalities, among them Highlanders coach and former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari.
The Bulawayo leg forms part of a wider production that has taken Mbwando and his team to different locations in Zimbabwe and abroad as they piece together his story and that of the Warriors generation he played alongside.
“We are shooting the documentary called The Warrior. It’s about myself, my journey. We are trying to tell our story from our days in the national team,” said Mbwando.
The former international believes the documentary will offer viewers something beyond the usual football archive, with rare footage forming a major part of the production.
“A lot of guys in the national team who are late but we have the videos. We have rare videos people have not seen,” he said.
That footage could give the production added historical value, particularly as it features members of the Warriors generation who have since passed away.
Mbwando’s journey has also taken the production team to Germany and France, while filming has continued in Harare and Bulawayo.
“We are almost through now because it’s Germany, France, almost everywhere Harare, Bulawayo. It will be a complete documentary about the Warriors,” he said.
The involvement of personalities such as Mwaruwari adds another layer to the project, linking Mbwando’s playing generation with the current Warriors and domestic football landscape.
Mbwando hopes The Warrior will be ready for release in December, with Netflix among the possible platforms should the finished production meet its requirements.
For now, the former Warriors star remains on the road, collecting the final pieces of a story that stretches from his playing days with the national team to the people and places that shaped his football journey.
