THE Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has said all pharmacies operating without authorisation will be immediately closed and those responsible will be prosecuted in a court of law.
The warning comes after worrying revelations that some pharmacies in Bulawayo, Matabeleland North, and South are not on the regulatory body MCAZ’s register, which is updated in real time.
Responding to questions, MCAZ spokesperson Mr Davison Kaiyo said that once they receive the names and locations of the pharmacies not on the register, an immediate and thorough investigation will be conducted in accordance with the Authority’s mandate.
“In terms of the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act [Chapter 15:03], no person or entity is permitted to operate a pharmacy without a valid licence issued by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe. Should any pharmacy be found operating without such authorisation, the premises will be closed immediately, and the responsible parties will be referred for prosecution,” said Mr Kaiyo.
He said the Authority, through its Licensing and Enforcement Division (LED), carries out routine inspections to ensure adherence to set laws and standards. He added that the Authority also conducts enforcement inspections in response to complaints and inquiries.
