THE MDC led by Professor Welshman Ncube has expelled outspoken losing Nketa National Assembly candidate Alderman Charles Mpofu for allegedly badmouthing the party’s leadership and bringing the party into disrepute. The party has also suspended its Bulawayo provincial secretary for the youth assembly, Mr Ntando Ndlovu.

Party members, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said letters were hand-delivered to the two’s homes on Thursday to inform them of the development.

This comes after the disciplinary committee chaired by Mr Paul Malaba felt that Ald Mpofu was not repentant and concluded that he should be fired from the party.

Ald Mpofu, a former freedom fighter who has previously been with Zanu-PF, MDC-T, UPP and Zapu, expressed ignorance on the development, saying he had not seen the letter.

He said he actually resigned from the party last week.
“The disciplinary committee decided to expel Ald Mpofu for his wayward behaviour and lack of respect for the party’s leadership. He has been insulting Prof Ncube through the media and campaigning for the party to be dissolved,” said a party member who asked not to be named.

“He was quoted in the media bragging that he was better than Prof Ncube who got only 10 votes in his home village in the harmonised elections. He also criticised the party’s national spokesperson, Mr Nhlanhla Dube, saying he was in that position because of the benevolence of the leadership.

“He also called for the dissolution of the party, saying Prof Ncube was surrounded by evil people.”
The party member said as for Mr Ndlovu, he was suspended because he was working with Ald Mpofu in causing confusion within the party.

“Mr Ndlovu is expected to appear before the disciplinary committee in due course. He has been working with Ald Mpofu in causing confusion within the party and badmouthing the leadership.

“The party leadership had planned to expel Ald Mpofu before the elections but the disciplinary committee decided to let him run for the elections in July because there was no time to elect somebody else,” said the party member.

The Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Mr Edwin Ndlovu confirmed the development but declined to give details.
He also said that he was not aware that Ald Mpofu had resigned from the party.

“I can confirm that Ald Mpofu has been expelled and Mr Ndlovu has been suspended from the party,” said Mr Ndlovu without giving further details.

“I am, however, not aware that Ald Mpofu has resigned from the party. We are yet to receive formal communication from him.”
Contacted for comment, Ald Mpofu said he had resigned because they did not want him to expose the wrong things done by the party leadership.
