An MDC-T official from Highfield West district on Tuesday appeared before a Mbare magistrate court facing charges of convening a political meeting without police clearance. The party’s organising secretary for Highfield West district, Maxwell Taderera (55), was charged with contravening Section 25(1)(a) of the Public Order and Security Act (Chapter 11:17) for allegedly organising a meeting attended by about 70 MDC-T supporters at No. 2453 Glen Norah A without notifying the regulatory authorities.
According to the State outline, the meeting was convened to show solidarity with party president Morgan Tsvangirai, whom the organiser said was being persecuted by senior MDC-T officials.
Prosecutor Mr Tendai Shonai revealed that on February 8, at around 6pm, police received information to the effect that there was an unauthorised political meeting at the house.
ZRP Glen Norah reacted swiftly and found MDC-T supporters donning their party regalia singing and chanting political slogans.
Taderera, who was represented by lawyer Mr Marufu Mandevere, was granted US$100 bail by area magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma.
The trial continues on February 18.
