The MDC-T is tomorrow set to hold its fourth congress to come up with a new leadership following a second split spearheaded by senior officials earlier this year who wanted party leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai to step down after his humiliating defeat at the hands of President Mugabe and Zanu-PF in the July 31 2013 harmonised elections.
Party secretary general Mr Tendai Biti and national deputy treasurer Mr Elton Mangoma led a group calling themselves Renewal Team.
Party organising secretary Mr Nelson Chamisa said all was set for the congress.
“All is on course for our congress to be held on Friday,” he said. “We are currently holding meetings as leadership to tie loose ends.
We are happy that our people are determined to ensure that the party is strengthened.”
Mudslinging and back-biting characterised events leading up to the MDC-T congress as party spokesperson Mr Douglas Mwonzora defied a party directive to chose which post he will contest following his nomination as secretary general and secretary for information and publicity.
This comes as sources in the party said Mr Tsvangirai preferred Mr Mwonzora to replace Mr Biti ahead of Mr Chamisa, who is the favourite after securing 11 provincial nominations against Mr Mwonzora’s single nomination.
The sources said Mr Tsvangirai was suspicious of Mr Chamisa whom he felt was too ambitious.
Mr Tsvangirai confirmed accusations of preferring some candidates ahead of others, allegations he denied on his Facebook page.
