- February 1999, Movement for Democratic Change was formed.
- January 26, 2000, Morgan Tsvangirai became president of the party, after inaugural congress that year.
- 2005, the party participated in the parliamentary election. It won 41 of the 120 contested seats. During the same year, the party split over participation in the November 26 Senate elections. Tsvangirai urged party members to boycott elections to choose senators to a newly-created Upper House of parliament, but his senior lieutenants disagreed.
- March 2008, After contested presidential elections in Tsvangirai became Prime Minister of Zimbabwe in 2009 under the Global Political Agreement, a power sharing deal brokered by then South African president Thabo Mbeki. Professor Arthur Mutambara and Thokozani Khuphe were appointed his deputies.
- July 2013, the MDC-T lost the presidential elections won by President Mugabe with a 61percent majority.
- March 2014, Deputy treasurer Elton Mangoma suspended, by the MDC-T National Executive Council after urging Tsvangirai to step down and allow for leadership renewal, triggering fighting in the party.
- April 26 2014, Tsvangirai, Khuphe, Chamisa, Mwonzora and Moyo suspended. Mangoma, Promise Mkwananzi, Jacob Mafume’s suspension lifted by the national executive council. Sipepa Nkomo appointed interim chairperson.
- April 27 2014, MDC-T officials say Tsvangirai’s suspensions null and void.
