SENIOR MDC-T members in Bulawayo yesterday opened up on their interests to take up the post of provincial chairperson that was left vacant after Gorden Moyo resigned last month.
Moyo, who is also the MP for Makokoba left the provincial party structures citing failure of leadership and lack of direction. Among those said to be interested in the post are acting Bulawayo provincial chair Dorcas Sibanda, Bulawayo East constituency legislator Tabitha Khumalo, provincial organising secretary Albert Mhlanga, Makokoba Senator Matson Hlalo and Bulawayo deputy mayor Councillor Gift Banda.
Sibanda expressed interest in the post saying it was only natural for her to ascend to a higher position in the party.
“It’s obvious that one moves from Grade One (up) to Grade Seven. If you find yourself going to Grade Two from Grade Seven then there is something seriously wrong with your head,” she said.
Clr Banda said he would make a decision when the time comes.
“I haven’t said I want to be the provincial chairman. People just throw my name around. When the right time comes and the decision needs to be made, I’ll make that decision. It’s an honour though for my name to come up in conversations about taking up such a serious position in the party.
“However, the likes of Mhlanga, Khumalo, Sibanda and Hlalo have openly declared that they want to take up the post,” he said.
Khumalo said: “Go back to whoever told you and tell them that Tabitha Khumalo is alleging that she wants to be the MDC-T chairperson for Bulawayo,” she said.
Moyo, once believed to be a close ally of party leader Morgan Tsvangirai due to his links to donors, said he chose to resign rather than be part of a failed leadership.
He bragged that he was a “principled” leader who could not reduce himself to petty fights currently rocking the MDC-T and distanced himself from the ongoing skirmishes.
Moyo said he did not believe in splinter groups whether led by Tsvangirai or Renewal Team leader Tendai Biti saying a fragmented MDC-T was headed for more doom.
