MDC-T legislator Ronia Bunjira appeared in court on Thursday charged with negligent driving after she was involved in an accident which she is alleged to have caused. Bunjira (50) of No. 2226 Mainway Meadows, Waterfalls, Harare, pleaded not guilty to the charges. She is represented by Mr Hopewell Chitima and the matter was adjourned to Tuesday next week. Bunjira is the holder of a valid driver’s licence.

In her defence, Bunjira blamed the complainant for negligence by failing to be on the lookout. “He drove behind a vehicle that was reversing. He is the one who didn’t exercise caution. “It is not true that my vehicle had no reversing lights,” she said. Prosecutor Miss Yeukai Musengi alleged that on June 16 around 11am, Bunjira was parked along Simon Muzenda Street (formerly Fourth Street) near its intersection with Speke Avenue.

She reversed her Ford Everest SUV (registration number ADI 9061) from the parking bay without checking the rear. Bunjira allegedly hit Noah Mapfumo’s Toyota Spacio (registration number ADD 1243), which was stationary behind her vehicle. The court heard that Mapfumo was driving along Simon Muzenda Street due south and was waiting to occupy the parking bay after Mrs Bunjira.

Her vehicle was scratched on the wheel cover on the rear, while Mapfumo’s vehicle sustained a slight dent on the front left fender. She is accused of failing to stop or to act reasonably when collision was imminent. She also failed to keep her vehicle under proper control and failed to keep a proper lookout, it is al- leged.
