MDC-T officials ‘resurrect’ the dead to register voters

Kuyeli Muchaiyana (40), the party’s chairman for Kuwadzana 4 branch and Grace Kubuku (30) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei yesterday charged with possessing articles for criminal use.

They were granted U$50 bail apiece, but will remain in custody for the next seven days after the State invoked Section 121 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act which allows it to hold a suspect for a week while considering an appeal.

Prosecutor Mr Tungamirai Chakurira opposed bail, arguing that Muchaiyana and Kubuku were not proper candidates because they were likely to abscond.

But Mr Ndirowei ruled that there was no risk of interference or absconding before remanding the duo to June 3.

It is alleged that on May 13 at Kambuzuma High 2 School, Muchaiyana was found in possession of four City of Harare water bills belonging to N Kapita, M Ngirande, W Chinyama, V Mugebe and two electricity bills belonging to Newman Kapita and Bigben Mungwariri.

It is the State’s case that Muchaiyana had two papers which had names and national identity numbers and two letters purported to have been authored by Kapita and Ngirande to support the proof of residence.

The court heard that Muchaiyana intended to give the documents to different people who did not stay at those given addresses to tender to the Registrar-General’s officials so that they would register as voters.

It is further alleged that on the same day at Budiriro 1 Community Hall, Kubuku was found in possession of an electricity bill belonging to the late Rita Masocha.
She also had a letter purported to have been written by Masocha, which she intended to give to officials from the Registrar-General’s office for her to register as a voter.
