MDC-T Bulawayo provincial youth chairperson Bekithemba Nyathi was allegedly assaulted and barred from a party meeting on Thursday for allegedly being part of the party’s renewal team opposed to leader, Morgan Tsvangirai.Nyathi alleges that a group of youths whom he believes to be Tsvangirai’s supporters were behind the attack that also saw his driver and personal assistant being manhandled. “I was accused by some youths that I was plotting to topple Tsvangirai as evidenced by my alleged boycotting of the Gweru rally recently. I was summoned to explain my stance on the matter or face suspension from the party. When I arrived a group of youths were outside drinking alcohol and at about 18.45PM they stormed into the offices and started hurling insults at me,” said Nyathi.
Nyathi also alleged that his personal assistant and driver were also assaulted and they reported the matter to the police.
The MDC-T provincial youth chairman claimed that the youths ordered him to vacate the party premises, declaring that he was no longer a member of the party.
“When we were leaving they kicked the door on the driver’s side and slapped my driver twice. They told me the youth wing had no time for lukewarm members and those against Tsvangirai must come out in the open,” said Nyathi.
MDC-T Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Mandla Sibanda said Nyathi was driving a personal agenda.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo was not immediately available for comment. MDC-T is going through an internal strife as some members agitate for Tsvangirai to step down.
It recently expelled its deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma, national executive member Last Maengahama and Jacob Mafume from the party for allegedly plotting against Tsvangirai.
