MDC-T provincial youth secretary for Harare Denford Ngadziore was yesterday arrested and detained at Harare Central Police Station for illegally convening a rally in the city centre.
The rally, which was purportedly to commemorate the Day of the African Child, was associated with disorder and violent encounters with the police in the Harare Gardens.
Police sources confirmed the arrest of the MDC-T member after the commemoration turned into a political rally.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba promised to avail more details to The Herald, but her phone went unanswered after the 30 minutes she had asked to be called.
MDC-T spokesperson Mr Douglas Mwonzora confirmed the arrest and said legal measures were being taken to free their party member.
“Our youth member Denford Ngadziore was arrested earlier today (yesterday) when they were demonstrating for jobs which were promised by Government, but have not been coming,” he said
“The charges are that he convened the demonstration without police clearance.”
Mr Mwonzora said his party would stage more demonstrations.
“It is not necessary to seek clearance in order to hold a rally,” he said. “We are going to stage more of these demonstrations to pressure Government to honor its promises.”
Observers dismissed the demonstration as the MDC-T’s attempt to remain relevant after being rejected by the people in the harmonised elections in July last year.
They said the MDC-T planned to disturb the smooth implementation of the Government’s economic blueprint, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset) which is set to benefit the majority.
