THE Zimbabwe Youth Chess Championship team left the country for Kampala, Uganda yesterday confident that they will bring home some medals.
The 21 member team was seen off at the Robert Mugabe International airport by ZCF president Todd Mapingire.
Comprising of 13 girls and eight boys the team will be in Uganda until April 24.
Uganda is this year playing host to the tournament which Zimbabwe hosted at Dominicant Convent school last year.
Mapingire encouraged the players to remain focused and win medals. “We are excited that we have managed to deploy a team that’s going to Uganda to represent the country. The team has reputable players that have participated in previous tournaments and we are confident they will bring home medals.
“We have got a number of players that are outstanding in terms of chess.
We are hopeful that this time around we will bring home more medals than before and we are grateful to the Ministry of Education and the Sports Commission for clearing us.
“We also thank schools, WestProp and Minerva for helping us, “ said Mapingire.
NASH and NAPH representative Tongesai Menyere said they are looking forward to a competitive event.
