The Rhodesia Herald,
March 29, 1978
SWINGING her way in The Rhodesia Herald’s Swinging Miss competition is 20-year-old Veronica Turner, a media clerk with a Salisbury advertising company.
Veronica, a former St John’s High School pupil, handles Press, radio and television advertisement bookings for her company.
“You meet lots of people, and I do enjoy meeting people,” she said.
Veronica’s spare time is taken up in swelling her coin collection, she has coins from about 20 different countries given by friends and pen pals, and a new interest, modelling.
“I hope to go overseas and further my modelling,” she said. Meanwhile, her sightseeing is confined to her parents’ farm where she spends a lot of time relishing the countryside.
Like a good many of the entrants, Veronica has entered the Swinging Miss competition for “fun”. And it is a lot of fun – with a lot of prizes. The Rhodesia Herald is offering $500 first prize and $150 and $75 to the girls who come second and third, respectively.
Then for the title holder there is also an Air Rhodesia Flame Lily all-inclusive weekend for two at the Victoria Falls leaving from Salisbury, an Institute of Languages’ bursary subject to educational qualifications, and a year’s free hairstyling from Audace Coiffure. And, of course, the prestige of being The Rhodesia Herald’s 11th Swinging Miss.
Entries close on Saturday – that’s two-and-a-half days in which to send us your entry form with a picture. If you don’t have a full-length photograph of yourself, telephone our photographic department for an appointment and The Herald will take your picture-free.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
- Modelling is a fun-filled profession that allows models to gain fame, meet a lot of people and to travel the world.
- Angeline Musasiwa, who was crowned Miss Zimbabwe in 1994 and was third runner-up at the Miss World pageant, is one of the country’s most successful model.
- Modelling can be a very rewarding profession if one manages to go all the way.
- For one to succeed in any profession, especially modelling, one needs to leverage on both their looks and brains.
- To succeed in something, you need to be passionate about it, and in some instances you do not need to be serious. Veronica Turner entered the pageant for the fun of it, but at the same time she was hopeful that it would be a launch-pad for her modelling career.
