EMERGING musician “Ricky Ice”, born James Sibanda, is making waves after recently winning the Kasi to Kasi Talent Search — a city-wide initiative aimed at uplifting and showcasing talent from Bulawayo’s townships.
The talent series, which toured various communities, was launched to provide a platform for up-and-coming artistes, who often feel sidelined from mainstream entertainment events. It was a collaborative effort between Dab Three Events, the Bulawayo City Council and Benniah Foods, developed in response to growing frustrations, among local creatives seeking exposure and career opportunities.
For Ricky Ice, winning the competition represents more than just recognition — it marks the breakthrough he has long awaited. The victory came with a recording album deal, which he believes will open doors that had previously remained closed.
Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub caught up with the rising star to reflect on his journey.
“I’m James Sibanda, but on stage I go by Ricky Ice. I’m a dancehall artiste, though I also branch into other genres like Zimdancehall, Afro-pop, Amapiano, Rhumba and RnB. I started making my own music in 2017,” he said.
Inspired by Dancehall superstar Winky D, Ricky Ice’s musical journey began with performing covers as a young boy. His debut track, Mudiwa, was produced by DJ Bibos. In 2022, he began working with producer Hardman Mr VPC, through whom he met T Flow da Producer — a key figure in shaping his current sound.
“I learnt a lot about creative styles while I was at Mzilikazi High School, where I studied Theatre Arts under Mr S Bhebhe. That experience helped me grow as an artiste,” he shared.
With more than 20 tracks to his name, including Skiri Bang, Like a Cheetah and Hawubvunzwe, Ricky Ice is now working on a new album titled Gondoguru, which means The Biggest Eagle, under the mentorship of Dab Three Events.
“I promise to deliver powerful music to Zimbabwe. Through my songs, I want to encourage youths to stay away from drugs and focus on building their futures,” he said. — @mthabisi_mthire
