MUKUDZEI CHIRUME, a 20-year-old influencer from Bulawayo known as MukuZim1, has gained fame for his uncanny impersonation of the late former President Robert Mugabe.
His TikTok skits, where he embodies the late former president’s speech and mannerisms, have garnered a large following and earned him opportunities to interact with top Government officials.
Accompanied by his self-invented team of bodyguards, MukuZim1’s resemblance to the late former president, accentuated by make-up that mimics his distinctive features like the straight line of beard under the nose, is striking.
Usually, he is accompanied by a colleague who impersonates the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo, further adding to the attention garnered by his entourage.
At this year’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo, MukuZim1 was a sensation as he toured stands accompanied by his aides and a special guest impersonating Michael Jackson. His presence drew large crowds and garnered invitations to grace various company stands at the exhibition.
Chronicle Showbiz recently caught up with MukuZim1, to delve into his unique journey and influence.
“I started imitating the late former president because he played a crucial role in our nation’s history, standing for the rights of the black majority. People welcome me wherever I go, showing their appreciation for my work,” he said.
Beyond entertainment, MukuZim1 uses his platform to address important issues such as drug abuse and to educate youth on shaping the future.
“My skits have opened many opportunities for me, as I’m now able to teach youths about burning issues such as drug and substance abuse and share ways in which we can shape our future together. I’ve also rubbed shoulders with great minds and people whom I never thought I could reach in my lifetime,” he said.
While MukuZim1 has no aspirations to become president, he remains committed to preserving Zimbabwe’s history through his performances.
“I don’t have any plans of becoming president one day; the idea has never crossed my mind as it’s a difficult task to take up. But I do have plans to continue teaching people about the history of our country. Our grandchildren will gain a lot from what I’m doing, even long after we are gone,” he said.
Invited frequently as a guest of honour at schools and events, MukuZim1 continues to engage audiences with his unique portrayal of Zimbabwe’s past leadership. Despite attending high-profile events, he has never encountered security issues, showing how society has embraced him.
“I don’t know how I manage to convince and gain trust from people, as I’ve never been blocked by security even when approaching our current Head of State. I’m starting to think it might be something spiritual because I really don’t know what happens, and many people ask me about it,” he added.
